No Value in this Very Disappointing Tour
Barbara_B
, Jul 2022
We were a group of 6 people so we traveled in a small comfortable mini-van. Melanie was charming and spoke for a few minutes during this 45 minute ride from San Antonio to the 1st winery. At the winery, Leticia who was very personable and charming let us sample 5 wines while she explained how each was made and the type of grapes used. The next winery was about a 15 minute ride. At this winery, William chatted about the 5 samples we tasted there as well. There is a lovely shop attached to the winery, but sadly we were not given any time to shop. Then we drove to Fredricksburg. Nothing of any particular interest was pointed out other than the myriad shops. We had to choose between eating lunch (not included) or shopping. No time for both. While the restaurant we chose had great service and great food, we were disappointed that we were not given any time to shop or wander around this little town.. This tour cost $159 and all it was was a ride to 2 wineries & then to a town to see nothing. Very disappointing tour. I am surprised at Viator because I have used their tours all over the world and they were always wonderful.

Barbara, I truly am very sorry to hear about your experience. In the future, we will definitely make sure that we allot for enough time for sightseeing in the area.

The friendly, funny, and knowledgeable tour guide was my favorite part of the tour. Diana was one of the best tours guides we have ever had. Sister Creek was a small but very interesting vineyard and winery with great wine. I will recommend to anyone interested in learning about Texas wine, breweries, or distilleries to take a tour with Cottonwood Tours. Just hope you get Diana because she was the best.

We enjoyed our two vineyard visits and lunch at Vaudeville. Matthew did a great job getting us to and from San Antonio and selecting vineyards that met our wine preferences.

First and for most Diana gave the best tour guide I’ve been on. Our first stop was beautiful at Saint Tryphon loved the atmosphere and when we got to Sisters Creek we were literally inside an old cotton gin from back in the day totally loved every part told this tour.

Diane was the ultimate host - nice and friendly but very knowledgeable & thoughtful. Great trip and wines very nice . Fredericksburg was very interesting with great local shops - plenty of variety. Great to get out of the city into the hill country

Loved our guide Matt. Enjoy our fellow touring guests. Matt modified the winery picks after seeing what our group enjoyed and it was a perfect choice. Would totally go again

Glad to hear that you had a great time, and it’s always fun when you have a great group of other folks you’re touring with. With so many wineries in the area, I’m sure we can definitely introduce you to a whole set of new wineries on your next visit, and we’d love to have y’all tour with us again. Thanks!

Fredericksburg Trip

The 3 star rating is by no means a reflection on Melanie who did a wonderful job as our tour guide/chauffeur. However, the tour itself seems as though it is set up backwards. We started out in the morning with the two wine tastings at St Tryphon and the Sisters wineries. Then 20-25 minutes drive time to Fredericksburg, arriving at 1:30. We had one & a half hours for lunch and to “explore” Fredericksburg. Unfortunately, it took an hour and fifteen minutes for lunch which left virtually no time to explore the town. It would seem a better option would be to hit Fredericksburg first, maybe with a stop at Luckenbach on the way and then visit the wineries on the way back to San Antonio.

Hi there. I am truly sorry to hear that your lunch stop took up most of your time in Fredericksburg, and I genuinely appreciate your feedback, and please know that there are definitely pros & cons to each potential way. On the occasions we have indeed tried our tour the way you suggest, surprisingly, we received more negative feedback on that way than how we currently offer our tour. Guests in the past have expressed that they would prefer making the winery stops on the way to the town so that they can have the drive broken up into smaller sections rather than having the full 70 minute drive from San Antonio to Fredericksburg at the beginning. Another challenge we have faced in the past are various stores & restaurants not being open early enough when making Fredericksburg our first stop. Some places may be open at 11 or noon depending on the day. By making the town last, we at least do everything in our power to ensure that we visit while as many places as possible are open. Other guests have also expressed that they just had breakfast right before our tour’s pick up, and with Fredericksburg as a 1st stop, they still had no desire for another meal. Then after a few wineries and with no other meal options on the way (since we are traveling through country roads) guests are famished by the end of the tour at 4:30. Additionally, adding another food stop at the end would greatly extend the time of the tour to well over 7 hours. But again, we do sincerely appreciate your feedback, and perhaps we will simply extend our time in Fredericksburg in the future.

First winery was great, second was not. Too little time in Fredericksburg. Long drive to wine country and back.
icon Response from Host , Apr 2022
Sorry to hear that your tour was a sub par experience. While we can’t adjust the distance to the Frederickburg area, we can definitely adjust the wineries that we visit, and ensure that we spend enough time in Fredericksburg in the future. We appreciate your feedback.

Hill Country Delights

Diana picked us up at our hotel and she is a delight. We did have a bit of trouble hearing her during the drive until she got the audio adjusted. We appreciated the bottled water and small snacks she provided. The tasting at Saint Tryphon was our favorite with wines that were absolutely lovely, memorable, and excellent. The setting is beautiful and the pours were generous. They ship and we will be purchasing. Tasting at Sisters was fun with several wines to compare and the historic cotton gin building is unusual. We thought the wines at Bingham were forgettable and would recommend a different stop. We had to pay additional for the Red Flight tasting which was off-putting, although it was our choice. An unexpected adventure was the Hill Country Distillers in Comfort and their spirits made from prickly pear cactus. Woody was a treat as he explained each sample. We ended up enjoying what we thought we wouldn't. The drive into the Texas Hill Country was what we had hoped for - and the tour is a great way to get a glimpse of this part of Texas and learning its history. We enjoyed a short stroll in Fredericksburg along with lunch - and would have liked a bit more time there but traffic delays had put us behind schedule. All in all we would recommend this tour for either the novice or experienced oenophile.
