Black sand and waterfalls
, Jun 2022
Our tour guide BG was excellent. He was funny, interesting and very knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Iceland and it’s varied topography. The black sand beach was stunning and the various waterfalls were beautiful.
This morning as a great way to spend a day in Iceland. Our guide, Hildy, was professional, polite, funny, and knowledgeable. Visiting the Secret Lagoon was an excellent way to relax and recuperate after the tour.
An amazing day trip in the aftermath of an arctic storm after many trips had been cancelled. Beautiful, frozen landscape. The tour guide was wonderful, added lots of local knowledge, stories and history into his narrative. Secret lagoon much needed warm up and deliciously misty on this frozen winter day. A fabulous day!
Thank you very much for your reply. The team of Gateway To Iceland is delighted that this day, this excursion, has been so successful.
We always make sure that our clients are satisfied.
We hope to see you again
Had a lovely time on this tour even though the weather did not cooperate. Dooley was very personable and we enjoyed hearing his stories of growing up in Northern Iceland. All the stops were unique and wonderful but the Secret Lagoon at the end of the trip was simply amazing especially after a day of cold and rain!
This was our first time in Iceland and we only had 1 day. I booked this tour because it basically covers all the places I wanted to see in a day. There were several communications between the company and I. They were responsive and got back to me in a timely manner. Our schedule was already tight as it was but on the day of, our flight was delayed for 1 hour. I called them on arrival and they made it work and we were still able to go on the tour. The tour was good with enough time spent on all the sites. Mr. Dooley was very nice, patient and knowledgeable about the places. He was great. He brought us back to our individual hotels which was very convenient because we still had our luggages. I usually book a small group tour when I can because it is more efficient, personalized and convenient way of touring. Not of lot waiting for so many people in big buses to get in and out. We had a very nice, new and comfortable van. The only thing is, I misunderstood. I thought we were going to the Blue Lagoon. Instead we went to the Secret Lagoon. It was still nice though. Entrance fee was included with the tour. I was greatly satisfied and would recommend this company and this tour.
Everything was great!! The destinations were beautiful. We spent exactly the right amount of time in each place. The Secret Lagoon was relaxing, even on a warmer day. Our tour guide, Dooley was informative and explained a lot of information about geography, history and personal stories from his childhood, growing up in Iceland.
Thanks for your review! We're glad you enjoyed your tour and had "exactly the right amount of time in each place." It's great to hear our guides are doing well. We wish you well in all your future travels.
This was the least good of three tours (and the only one with Gateway to Iceland, another with them having been cancelled at less than a day's notice).
The good bits - the pick up/drop off was very efficient and minibus was modern, spacious and comfortable particularly as we were only 12 people. The guide made the most of a couple of the sights by dropping off in one place and picking us up in another.
The scheduling of the trip was quite poor though - pick up is quite late (10.00) and it is scheduled for 8 hours but we weren't back until after 19.00 yet we didn't do a single thing not on the schedule (my other two trips each had several interesting extras and on this trip we just drove past various interesting stops where other groups were parked) and it would have been much later but for events at the Secret Lagoon (see below). Speaking with others who had done Golden Circle tours they made a lot more stops and saw much more than we did. I and others had dinner reservations, relying on the schedule.
We spent 1 ½ hours at Pingvellir which was very interesting but it quickly became clear we wouldn't be doing much in the day as time was running away. Lunch was not until 2pm which upset some in the party. The guide kept on looking at and his answering his phone (no hands free) while driving and on the way from Gulfoss to the Geysir he cancelled one call but then had a very animated conversation at 80 km/h (having slowed from 100) at more than one point taking both hands off the steering wheel. When we arrived at Geysir, we all had to hang around while he answered various further calls and it then became apparent (when the call was in English) that the office 'phone was diverting to him and he was dealing with a couple whose tour for the following day and they were being rebooked with another firm (East West) which they weren't too happy about and hadn't been provided with any details of. It's obviously very irresponsible/dangerous (and illegal in most countries) to use the mobile while driving but when its our tour, it is quite unreasonable for us on a tour to hang around for 20 minutes while the guide deals with office issues.
At the Secret Lagoon, 5 of the 12 people didn't want to swim so just had to wait for 1h35mins and three people had a go but didn't like it at all (and got out after 10 mins) so ultimately 8 of 12 were hanging around for over an hour in a stuffy/hot room while it was raining heavily outside; three left just to sit in the bus. Fortunately the four swimmers got out quite early, so our wait was shortened so I went to tell the guide and we left early. What's a bit of a scam about this is that the Secret Lagoon entry price (ISK3,000/US$23) is included in the price so if you don't swim, they keep the money! Quite annoying; it should be an optional extra, not profiteering by Gateway to Iceland.
Our guide, Gummi, was very experienced and seemed like a nice chap, but he spoke non stop in a monotone, much of it trivia, which we all agreed was incredibly boring and not really very informative - more like a recorded message.
In summary, I wouldn't use Gateway to Iceland again as it doesn't seem a very professional firm, first cancelling a trip a very short notice (and this seems to be regular thing for them) then not planning the Golden Circle tour well to use the time efficiently and show people more, keeping the unused swimming fees and above all allowing unsafe driving practices by making the guide answer the office 'phone while on another tour. Basically, all is done for the convenience of Gateway to Iceland and the customers/customer service is not important to them. Best choose another firm.
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story! Jakob was a great guide with passion for the country that he loves. Beautiful scenery with dramatic potential that he exploited to the maximum. Extremely entertaining and informative
We had a great trip yesterday. It wasn’t the best weather but Iceland still looks stunning in the rain. Our tour guide Gummi was a lovely, extremely knowledgeable and interesting. Topping the tour off with the secret lagoon just made it even better. We would definitely recommend.
Amazing day, absolutely stunning sites, good pace, good choice of stops and a lovely cafe stop for lunch where we could grab a delicious lamb soup.
Ian (the guide) was very friendly and had buckets of knowledge about everything Icelandic, which he shared whilst driving (via a microphone). The group was very small on the day, which added to the personal feel of the tour.
Worth every penny, highly recommended.
