On arrival, meet your instructor to adivse of your ability level—beginner, intermediate, or experienced.

Get up-close to the Icelandic horses, learning about this gentle breed. Descendants of Viking horses brought here in the 10th century, these sturdy, good-nature steeds are known for their tölt, a four-beat gait that makes riding on rugged terrain smooth and comfortable.

Next, watch a short instructional video, don your provided riding gear, and hop into the saddle. Learn to ease your horse into the tölt, and set out behind your instructor. Soon afterward, having watched you riding, your instructor splits you into three groups—beginners, intermediates, and experienced.

Beginners ride slowly over easy terrain, with intermediate and experienced riders tackling more challenging routes at different paces. Just advise your instructor if you want to go slower or faster.

As you ride, soak in the beautiful scenery. Weave through lava fields and moorland, passing volcanic mountains and lakes.

After your trek, savor coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at the stables.

The guides were extremely helpful for beginning riders like myself! We ended up having a great time and were able to go along pretty fast, and the guides made sure we felt comfortable the entire time. Great experience, and it was only a short 25 min drive from where we were staying in Reykjavik.
Great experience

Great first experience with horses. Really recommend it. They pick you up and leave you at your hotel as well which worked out great.
Iceland vacation highlight!

We have two children under the age of 10. This horseback experience was one of the main highlights of our vacation to Iceland! The guided tour was amazing, educational and absolutely worth every penny! We would highly recommend anyone interested in learning about and going horseback riding in Iceland!

Excellent experience

Well organized, right lengths of activity, and above all people were so nice and helpful. We were picked up and drop off at the central Reykjavik so we didn’t need to rent a car or try public transportation. A guy in the office was so kind and always careful not to let anyone miss the return chauffeur. We were absolute beginners of horse riding, but guides were amazing and horses were quite sweet so we didn’t have any trouble. One good thing we didn’t expect was that the riding lasted more than 1 hour. We had plenty opportunity of trying different ways of running as well as shooting the photos. Different weather might have made our experience difficult but luckily we were blessed with nice weather. It would’ve been perfect Di we can see more scenic views other than lupines and lava, but I believe it does not write the whole experience off. If you are looking for 3-4 hour long activity around Reykjavik, I’d definitely recommend Ishestar.

You've never been horseback riding like this!

We ended up having a wonderful & small tour. There were just three of us with our guides. You can tell they treat the horses well. They're happy & friendly. The horses are very different than ones you're used to. Icelandic horses are smaller (don't call them ponies!), very friendly and come in so many different combinations of colors. This ranch was huge and we had a nice trot through beautiful landscapes. They make good hot chocolate, too!
Great for riders of any experience

My wife and I are not experienced riders at all. That being said, Patricia was great! We asked to be picked up in town which was easy and on time. There were only four of us on the tour, me and my wife as well as another couple. The other couple was older and even less experienced. She was patient and helpful throughout the ride. They put us with horses based on our ability, which was great. We saw beautiful scenery and even the volcano erupting in the distance. The horses were awesome. Very docile and tame. They would walk right up to you and loved attention. I had a horse named Piano. He had just got back from "vacation" and was ready for a good ride. We would absolutely do it again.
