Coyoacán, National University, and Frida Kahlo Museum

After meeting your guide in downtown Mexico City, your full-day tour kicks off at Coyoacán, which dates back to pre-Hispanic times. Admire 16th-century mansions along cobblestone streets, and learn about one of Mexico City’s oldest neighborhoods from your informative guide. Today, the area has blossomed into a cultural nexus for intellectuals and artists.

Visit the National Autonomous University of Mexico, built-in 1551, and check out the UNESCO-listed Central Campus, a collaboration that came together in 1952 involving more than 60 engineers, architects, and artists, including muralists Diego Rivera and Juan O´Gorman.

Next, head over to Jardín Hidalgo, and enjoy a lunch break here (own expense) in the garden area boasting restaurants, studios, and craft stalls. Next, enter the church of San Juan Bautista with your guide and admire the paintings inside.

A fan of Frida Kahlo? At Coyoacán Casa Azul (Blue House), or the Frida Kahlo Museum, immerse yourself in the tumultuous life and iconic artwork of this beloved artist. It is here where Kahlo lived and loved with her husband, Diego Rivera. Enjoy an hour of free time in the museum.

Xochimilco

Your Mexico City sightseeing adventure continues at Xochimilco, located 17 miles (28 km) south of Mexico City, a waterway network of floating gardens of flowers. An ecological reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this valley was a lake during Aztec times. To get around the scarcity of arable soil back then, the people developed chinampas, islands with floating reed mats with soil.

Spend about an hour drifting peacefully along the canals and admiring the chinampas from your colorful, flat-bottomed boat called a trajinera. Hear festive music from other boats, occupied by families and visitors celebrating weddings, birthdays and other happy occasions.

As your boatman moves the vessel along by pulling a pole through the water, pass other painted vessels transporting passengers and check out boat-vendors selling fresh food. Enjoy an array of dishes and drinks for purchase, including roasted corn, mole, mixiote (barbequed meat), tacos, carnitas, quesadillas, pulque (milk-colored alcoholic beverage) and micheladas (Mexican beer-based cocktail).

Your day tour ends with drop-off back at the central meeting points.

Floating Gardens of Xochimilco
After the Frida Kahlo Museum, continue on to Xochimilco, an agricultural area located 17 miles (28 km) south of Mexico City where many of the city’s flowers are grown. Back in Aztec times, this valley was once a lake. Learn how the local people, as a way around the lack of farmland, developed islands with floating reed mats loaded with soil and used them as gardens called chinampas. Today, these gardens are an ecological reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Board a colorful, flat-bottomed boat called a trajinera with your guide, and for an hour take a slow cruise on the chinampa channels, passing by floating gardens of flowers. As your boatman moves the vessel along by pulling a pole through the water, hear from your guide about the characteristic boats, originally hollowed from logs and once used for transportation throughout Mexico. Pass by other painted vessels transporting passengers and check out the boat vendors selling fresh food. Hungry? Taste a variety of dishes and drinks, such as mole, mixiote (barbequed meat), roasted corn, quesadillas, tacos, carnitas, pulque (milk-colored alcoholic beverage) and micheladas (Mexican beer-based cocktail). (Food and drink purchases are at your own expense.) Hear music like mariachi drifting from other boats, occupied by families and visitors celebrating birthdays, baptisms, weddings, or simply a good time. Good tour

Good tour and experience. Enjoyed the tour to the University, Xochimilco and Coyoacan. The stop to the souvenir store could have been avoided and been substituted into one of the places we visited. Kudos to Kevin and his team!

Such a fun trip. The group spoke Spanish as a whole so Alexa had to share the stories and facts in Spanish (and English for me). I felt she made sure I was understanding things along the way. There was ample time at each of the activities (though of course who wouldn’t want to stay longer floating on the water drinking tequila and cervesa or sitting longer in Frida & Diego’s courtyard filled with beautiful art, artifacts and color). I would absolutely recommend this tour and Alexa.

I had to book with another tour company because this one never showed up at the location. I was worried from the beginning cuz they didn't even send me any kind of confirmation

Dear Amig@ Thank you for your comment. We are sorry you could not be part of this experience. We would love to know more about your case, since our service is a meeting point, so the units arrive at the indicated place, give a time of tolerance and leave, if we had not been presented with any of these points, we would have more complaints about it. For that reason, if you require any clarification, you can contact us through your agency so we can assist you in more detail. Dulce, Amigo Tours

Trying new foods on the street. Relaxing on the boats while in Xochimilco, was very nice. The evening rains were soothing and the museum store was wonderful. The tour guides were so much fun.

Did not meet our expectations! :(

We had high anticipation of this tour , but it did not meet our expectations. First of all, I had explicitly requested a proficient English speaking guide, since we do not know any Spanish. The guide had a very heavy accent, and it was very hard to understand what he was saying. It was to the extent that we stopped listening after a while. The tour started off with spending almost an hour at a gift shop, and we were not interested in shopping. And, then an hour and a half at a university campus quad and looking at a mural, which could have easily been just a drive by. After that , we went to Xochimilco. The boat tour was good, but the hour time spent on the quad before and after was not needed. It felt more like trying to kill time. The lunch that we ordered in the boat was awful too. Our next stop was Coyoacan, which was nice. But we were given only 10 minutes to spend there. Could have easily spent more time in the beautiful park. Then we went to Frida Kahlo museum, which was good. Overall, we could have done the highlights of the tour in half a day. The rest of the time could have been more interesting if we could have understood the guide. Instead , we took good naps on the bus.

Dear Amig@ Thank you very much for your comments and we are sorry that for you this experience did not meet your expectations. All our tours are bilingual, we would have loved to know which guide attended you in order to specifically address this observation. We appreciate your trust. Dulce, Amigo Tours

Good and fun experience at Xochimilco

Despite the title, this tour does NOT include a visit to Frida's museum. The visit to Coyoacan was good and also Xochimilco. Our trip also included a stop to the UNAM campus.

Dear Amig@ Thank you very much for letting us know about your experience. The tour includes the Frida Kahlo tour for clients who purchase that modality, for those who don't, you are given free time to explore Coyoacan, which is also a great place. Thank you for being part of this experience. Dulce, Amigo Tours

Great for a first day in Mexico City

This was fine-probably better for the more cautious traveler just getting acclimated to Mexico City. I don’t think it was the most efficient use of time but it was nice to be with a big group at xochilimico. We were taken to a gift shop first and then to the university to see the murals. Ultimately it was nice to just be shuttled around and not have to worry about finding our way and was cheaper than hiring a driver from the hotel. I suppose you could do the same plan and Uber (those were plentiful, good and cheap) but then you’re on your own at Xochimilco. Coyocan was lovely to walk around. We stayed there after the museum and had dinner and took an Uber back to the hotel.

This was such a great and fun experience. The tour bus was spacious and comfortable. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the places that were shown. She always made sure everyone was on the tour bus before leaving to our next detitanation. The our was paced well and we had the opportunity to see many different things.

Had a great time! Xochimilco was fantastic, and I enjoyed visiting Coyoacan on a Sunday - it was super lively. Guide (Lee? Led? not sure of name) was great and very kind, spoke good English. Tour was hard to find at the meeting point, but eventually I asked around and found people waiting and joined them. Bus was comfortable. There were no more Frida tickets when I booked so I had to go without, and it was a lot of free time at the Coyoacan market. This was ok because it was a weekend, but on a weekday it would have been too much time because we had to wait for people at the museum. We also stopped by the University of Mexico, which was a great surprise stop, and saw a lot of murals and heard about Mexican history and education
