Established in the early 1940s by the Nazis, Auschwitz was originally intended for Polish political prisoners. Later, when it was extended to include the neighboring site of Birkenau, it became a larger concentration camp for primarily European Jews, killing an estimated 1.1 million people.

Begin your trip with pickup at select Krakow hotels or in central Krakow, at your preferred departure time. Accompanied by your guide, travel to the town of Oswiecim while a documentary on WWII and the Nazi Holocaust is shown on board. Arrive at the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Enter the gates bearing the inscription Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Sets You Free) and then head inside to learn about how the complex quickly turned from a detention camp to a center for mass murder. Your guide discusses the camp’s history in a sensitive manner as you visit the crematoriums and gas chambers, as well as the watchtowers and fences at Birkenau where the Nazi officers stood guard.

After examining the exhibitions inside the old prison blocks, pay your respects at the camp's somber memorial. Your trip concludes with drop-off back at your original departure point.

Auschwitz Trip

Anna was very knowledgeable on the trip. She is an excellent driver and very personable. Our guide at Auschwitz was very detailed in her descriptions. It was a good trip albeit a very difficult place to visit. May they Rest In Peace.

I highly recommend this tour if visiting Krakow. The driver was friendly and prompt picking us up from the hotel. We were in a van with one other family. It was nice to not have to worry about transportation to the site or be on a crowded bus. The tour guide was knowledgeable and gave great insight to an awful event in history.

Auschwitz amazing, bus ride not so much!

Auschwitz is an unforgettable experience. The long, cramped, bus ride which stops at several hotels and pick-up points in Kraków, much less so. I would make my own way there if I were to come again. There’s a shuttle bus between the two sites and you can book your own guide.

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, you can organise a tour on your own although it is not always as easy as you describe. We organize group trips so depending on the number of people it varies, but we do our best to make the trip as comfortable as possible for everyone.

Sombre visit but, in my opinion a must. Excellent knowledgeable guide. Viator kept me updated throughout. Would definitely use again

Overall positive experience as a solo female traveler
Rebecca_M
, Feb 2022
I had an overall positive experience with a few challenges/surprises. I highly recommend visiting Auschwitz. The day before the tour, I received an email instructing me to be at the Sheraton Grand Krakow at 10:50 AM. I assumed this meant the main pickup point described on Viator (the bus parking lot across the street from the hotel). At 10:50 AM, I was standing in the empty parking lot when I received a friendly call from the main office. They informed me that the van was running a little late due to other passengers. At 11:01 AM, I received a call that the van had arrived and was looking for me. It turns out I was supposed to be across the street at the entrance to the hotel! I ran across the street and was the last person to get on the bus. I did not see a sign for Cracow Tours and the silver van looked like a lot of other vans in the area. There were 18-20 people on board plus the driver and guide. All of the seats were filled and they were very comfortable. There was not a bathroom on board and there was not a documentary, which was described on Viator. The driver greeted us in English and then we drove in relative silence to Auschwitz. We left Krakow a little after 11 AM and arrived at Auschwitz I at 12:15. I had packed a lunch and left it in my backpack in the van. We walked over to the visitor’s center and had 10 mins to use the bathroom/go into the gift shop. We met up at a specific location and were given our 12:30 PM tour tickets. Our Auschwitz tour guide greeted us and we immediately went through security… no waiting in line! Headsets were provided by the museum so we could hear our guide well. Every once in a while the signal was less clear, perhaps because I was farther away from the guide. The guide was very knowledgeable and respectful. There was little to no time for questions. You can take pictures except in one room. We returned to the visitor’s center. Before starting the Auschwitz I tour, the Cracow Tours guide told us to take a 15 min break afterward and then return to the van. This break was a stressful time for me as a solo traveler— I lost the group when I went to the bathroom and I didn’t know where to meet the van. The van had dropped us off out front then parked in an unknown location… the were so many identical vans! I then remembered that the guide mentioned “12.” I looked for a parking spot designated “12” but the spots weren’t numbered. I also looked for members of my tour group- we were each given a specific sticker. However, my sticker fell off and so did the stickers of other people in the group. Luckily I managed to spot someone familiar near a van. There was a small sign on the windshield that said “12” (there wasn’t a Cracow Tours sign). Relieved, I ate lunch as we drove a few minutes to Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Our original Auschwitz guide met us at the second location. After the tour, we walked back to the parking lot as a group. Someone quickly spotted the van labeled “12.” We drove back to Krakow and hit some traffic on the way. Due to the traffic, we were all dropped off near the border of Old Town and the Jewish district around 5 PM. I would recommend this tour— as long as you understand some of the differences from the description on Viator. Also make sure that you know how to find the van after the break!

Thank you very much for such an extensive message and opinion. Due to, among other things, the large number of tourists not everything is as we expected, but I am glad that the trip met your expectations and went without major problems.

Great tour with value for money 👍

Easy to book with an E - mail to confirm our collection time from the hotel, the driver was on time, professional and knowledgeable. When we got to our destination at Auschwitz we were met by a guide and her assistant, and even though it was busy we got through in to Auschwitz pretty quick with no hassle. The tour was amazing for all the wrong reasons, our tour guide was very knowledgeable, professional and helpful and spent the next 4 hours with us, answering any questions we had and ensuring we were fully briefed on how, why and what had happened in Auschwitz over the 2nd WW. Excellent tour, very well looked after and defiantly value for money.

Absolutely recommended! A must do and see! Amazing guide!

Needless to say that the tour itself is a must-do when around Krakow! It always leaves you speechless to see and being narrated what happened there. But i would like to highlight here the professionalism and high experience of the operators of this tour: perfect to the last detail, from picking us up from the hotel, to leading us to Auschwitz, to explaining and telling us explicit details of what happened there. The drivers and the transfer were safe, excellent! But my sincere congratulations go to our guide: highly knowledgeable, sensitive to the topic but also totally aware of the importance of his narrations, being telling not what he read but what he communicated to acquaintances and relatives, being humble and knowing how and when to emphasise on the atrocities as they ought to have been. Highly recommended, do NOT miss!

This was a moving and memorable tour! But be advised that the tour operator has the sole purpose of getting you to the memorial site and making sure that you are hooked up with a memorial site tour guide. Then you will be led by an experienced tour guide employed by the memorial site who will speak extremely rapidly, give a ton of information, and not have much time to field your questions. All in all, extremely worth the price and your time to be able to experience this important part of history.

Don't pay extra for the documentary enroute
MollyCassandra_B
, Nov 2021
There are many tours with roundtrip transfer available for the memorial. We chose this one (and paid more) because it promised a documentary to be played during the 80 min car trip to the memorial. This never happened. The driver said he did not have a CD to play. Upon arrival at the site, the driver didn't always seem to know what was going on. In the end we took the tour as planned and the guide provided by the museum was very well-informed.
icon Response from Host , Nov 2021
Thank you for your message and we are sorry that the film was not played during the transfer, but at that time the divice was not implement into your car. We are working to ensure that our entire fleet of cars is equipped with the appropriate devices. We are sorry but we believe that you found your trip satisfying.

Shuttle nightmare

We were asked to report 90 minutes early for a 9 am tour. We were then shoved and packed like cattle in a small minivan (during the Covid 19 pandemic). The car didnot start and we were then told to wait for a different car. Finally the driver talked on the cellphone the entire trip.
icon Response from Host , Oct 2021
We apologize for any inconvenience, this is a busy time and not everything will go as expected. It almost never happens to us that these types of problems occur. We will do our best to make sure something like this does not happen again.

Our pick up was exactly on time and our driver was great - very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Our tour round the sites was given by someone who was very knowledgeable and we did not feel rushed. You must visit to learn about the harrowing experience and atrocities which these innocent men, women and children were subject to. A very humbling experience. I thoroughly recommend this company for this trip.
