Ports

  • Port Chalmers (Also known as Port Otago)

Book your shore excursion in the morning or afternoon, beginning with pickup at Port Chalmers. Board a minivan with a small group of travelers for the scenic drive toward the suburb of North Dunedin. Your guide makes a stop at Baldwin Street, the world's steepest residential street.

The drive continues up the Leith Valley toward the Craigieburn Reserve for views of the city, Ross Creek Reservoir, and Otago Harbour. Learn about efforts to conserve the lowland Rimu forest and hear of the early pioneers who settled the area. Then, pass by the upscale homes of Maori Hill and see other fine architecture, such as Olveston House, on a drive through the Dunedin Town Belt.

Stop at the Octagon in the city center for a look at several significant buildings and a statue of the Scottish poet, Robert Burns. Down the road, focus your camera on the historic Dunedin Railway Station, one of the most photographed buildings in the southern hemisphere.

Upon reaching the Otago Peninsula, search the shore for wildlife such as yellow-eyed penguins and New Zealand fur seals. Admire unrivaled vistas from several lookouts over the eponymous harbor before a final stop in the leafy suburb of St. Clair. Stroll along the beachfront promenade at one of the South Island's most popular surf spots, before the return trip to the cruise port.

Great tour of Otago Peninsula and Dunedin city sights. Our guide Scott was knowledgeable and fun. Scott pointed out several birds that we would not have seen otherwise and certainly would not have known what they were without his help. Highly recommend this tour that included time at the railway station - go upstairs to the art gallery, and a walk on the beach to see sea lions.

Late departure and erratic driving
Gary V
, Nov 2019
Tour started 15 minutes late, even though driver was seen once before tour started, but disappeared. Driver drove at high speeds on very winding roads, kept staring off to right while driving vehicle, and spent time at beach taking personal photos well ahead of customers on the tour. Will not recommend!

Hi Gary, Thank your feedback, we rarely get a 2 star review so your review, although uncommon, is extremely important to us - thank you for that. It's certainly unusual to hear you describe one of our drivers as 'erratic' because we carefully select them to make sure they are the exact opposite. We also have GPS devices fitted to all our vehicles that monitor driver behaviour so I'm personally surprised by this review because I review the data regularly. In fact, we've never had this type of feedback since the business started back in 1997 so it's important you contact us as soon as you can. We have been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks so we apologize if your tour started 15 minutes late, at this stage I'm unsure of the facts of your experience as we are having difficulty identifying exactly who you are. To help us address you complaint could you please e-mail us directly at hello@backtonaturetours.co.nz. Please provide us with the date of your tour and the name of the driver so we can fully understand your experience. You can phone us direct on 0800 286 000. Gary, we wish you all the best mate and look forward to hearing from you. Yours Sincerely, C.J Roberts

Wasn't what I expected. There are some beautiful views but it wasn't scenic enough. It starts from the port and surrounding areas and drops you off at the city's octagon at end. Also this tour did not include a walk on the beach to see wildlife. I think that would have been nice. The city is like any other city with a bit of heritage buildings. Small and compact.

Great tour of the city. Friendly and knowledgeable guide. Loved the countryside and beach. Even saw a sea lion basking on the sand. Good value for your money.

Very enjoyable trip around Dunedin with a company and representative who clearly knew their stuff. Very good value and enjoyable. I cannot understand why anyone books with a cruise company at twice the price.
