Not what I expected

The guide on this tour was really lovely, knowledgeable and did a great job at sharing the same info both in English and French. The trip to Saint Émilion was a nice surprise, though a warning about the very steep descent to the underground church would have been nice to have in advance. I was quite disappointed with the wine tour part of the tour as we only went to one winery, only got two tastings and it was very disorganized. Not enough places for everyone to sit - or be in the same room. Hardly the tasting I’m used to in other parts of the world. There wasn’t even break or water to cleanse the pallet. Overall, the tour was OK.

Not a vineyards tour

This is a tour of Saint Emilion with a single vineyard tour and only one brief wine tasting (with two small glasses of wine). The name of this tour suggests you visit multiple vineyards with wine tastings, but that is not the case. The guide (Frederic) was good and very articulate in French and English, and seeing the underground saint emilion church was interesting, but the tour was not as advertised.

Not a wine tasting tour.

This tour is definitely NOT what you think. By all means if you’re not into wine but want to visit a nice town and walk around a winery learning about the process then go for it. Anyone else, I do not recommend this tour at all for reasons I will explain. I came for a wine tasting tour and went to ONE winery for two tasting servings of wine. TWO! (Advertised to visit two wineries also by the way) The tour Left Bordeaux at 1330 and wine didn’t pass our lips until about 1700! Really the operator should not call this a wine tasting tour, it’s really a history tour. Granted the visit to the town of St Emillion was nice but most of the tour was actually spent here and not at winery. I and my husband ended up just leaving the tours visit to a church to pay for a wine in the main square so we could start experiencing the local wine. We then went to the one winery of the so called wine tour with the group. Most of it was spent touring the grounds and getting the history of the place, how the wine is made etc which of course is part of the course though it was very long. We got our two meagre wine samples at the end of all this then home. I am very passionate about wine and have been on many wine tours in Australia, New Zealand and the US. I would advise anyone that wants to really explore and experience tasting various wines in the region to hopefully find something else. Contact the tour operator to find out how many tastings, wineries etc so you know what to expect. My husband and I were bitterly disappointed. Avoid if you’re planning on drinking more than two tasting servings of wine on an entire ‘wine tasting’ tour.

The village of St Emilion...

The village of St Emilion was nice to visit but the winery tour was disappointing because it was a modern winery and did not bring out the romance of wine making in all it's traditional glory..the cellers were not underground and the person explaning was very poor in English while the language of the tour was supposed to be English.

Visiting the winery was the highlight. The owners were charming and informative! Wish we could have visited another winery with another tasting.

Too much talking, not enough tasting.

The tour involved just so much talking and history of wine. We didn't really get to taste much, just two wines per vinyard, after standing in cold store rooms for more than an hour each.

It was ok!

It was ‘ok’. The tour guide talked the whole journey, and I mean non-stop, which was a bit annoying. When we arrived at St Emilion, a few of us went to the toilet and told her we were, and asked she wait for us so we could join the tour to the underground church, which was optional. She said ‘yes’ of course, but despite us only taking a few minutes, she walked off without us. We literally had to run to catch up. Don’t say yes, but then leave! The underground church viewing took far too long. What started as interesting, quickly became boring. I’d strongly recommend you opt out and spend the time in the town instead. There’s nothing of interest in there. It’s dark, dank, cold and like I said, biting after about 10 mins. I think we were in there for about half hour!!! We tried to get out but the door was locked, so had to endure it. I wish we’d gone for a glass of wine or shopping in the pretty town instead. We then had about 20 mins in the town before boarding the coach again to go for wine tasting. Again, it was just ok. To call it wine tasting is overdoing it. It was literally a ‘drip’ of wine. We got to test two wines. Nobody expects a glass of wine, not even half or quarter of a glass, but honestly, despite not being a ‘drinker’, it barely wet my lips. Very disappointing. Many people were saying the same thing! It was nice to visit St Emilion, even if briefly. I’d have liked to score higher and be more enthusiastic about it but I can’t.

I went on Thursday 3rd of October. The guide on the bus was SO good. He didnt just give us a history of Bordeaux that he had read in 5 mins from a lonely planet book as many often do. He gave us history, word etymologies, explained culture and language, al in the trip to the vineyard. Such an excellent guide, very pleasant and professional and didnt even ask if we "could leave a review". The first lady at Chateux Auzac (brown hair) was formidable, a wealth of information, no question she did not know the answer to. The tour was great, and we got to learn a lot about the wine making process. The second location was less commercial so got to see the process a bit. Tour guiding wasnt super like the last one. My only criticism is that we didnt get to go to a vineyard or see any of the processes really of wine making. If possible, this could be added on for when I bring my mum next time! The coach was super clean and comfortable.

Overall disappointing but good sights

Disorganised at the start. Group too large. Guide should have used a marker eg flag to find him. One part was a steep downhill walk - we should have been advised to bring strong shoes. The wine tasting was brief and the group too large. Water should have been offered. The English of the young French woman at the winery wasn’t quite adequate in this setting.

There were way too many people on this trip to make it enjoyable and the journey between wineries was very long.

A taste of Bordeaux - Highly Recommended

We went on two half-days trips, to two different regions of Bordeaux, with two different guides, and found both tours equally interesting and enjoyable. Both trips were with large groups, Our first tour was to the Medoc region. Our guide Christine explained as we travelled the history of wine growing, speaking both in French then in English. We visited two chateaux where upon arriving we were split into French and English speaking groups. We learnt further about the chateaux we were visiting, the grapes they were growing and the wine they produced, sampling two wines at each chateaux. Our second tour was to St Emillion and the beautiful Chateaux Pressac. Brigitte, our tour guide, once again explained the history of wine growing as we travelled, but delivered the explanation in a different style to our first guide so it was still very interesting (speaking both in French then in English). Brigitte also explained the history of St Emillions in both languages, pointing out lots of interesting items as we walked through the village and churches. We remained in one large group on arriving at the Chateaux Pressac, where the company guide spoke French then in English about the grapes which were being grown and the wine produced. Again we sampled two wines. As non-drivers we think these tours are a good experience to see in a very short space of time the countryside, villages and chateaux of Bordeaux whilst at the same time learning more about the wine industry.

It was very interesting to see two vineyards and worth the €42. However it would have been even better if the process had been clearly explained. The tour guides could be given a script which would add clarity. It was good to taste some of the wine but again it would be better if someone gave a brief lesson on tasting wine - the bouquet, legs etc.
