Ansel Adams Gallery Tours

Ansel Adams Gallery
Ansel Adams is known for his striking black-and-white photos, capturing and preserving the wild beauty of nature’s monuments. Through his poignant images of Half Dome and Vernal Fall, Yosemite became a symbol for the evocative drama of the American West, and the park took its place in the hearts and consciousness of the American public.

The Basics
Fans of Ansel Adams will definitely want to visit this gallery in Yosemite, which features original photos, archival replicas, and other unique pieces. More than just a display of Adams’ work, the gallery also features works from other contemporary artists; exhibits are rotated every six weeks. The gallery offers outdoor photography workshops for budding and experienced nature photographers alike, which generally include a stop at the gallery to learn about Adams.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The Ansel Adams Gallery is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in fine-art photography.
  • Free camera tours are available several times per week; note that those on Tuesdays depart from the nearby Majestic Yosemite Hotel.
  • Wheelchair users should note that there is a ramp on the visitor center side of the building that leads to the upper level of the gallery.

How to Get There
The Ansel Adams Gallery is located in Village Mall in the Yosemite Valley, right by the visitor center off Northside Drive. Parking is available in the lot in front of the Village Store; alternatively, guests can walk about 20 minutes to the Yosemite Valley Lodge. The gallery is about a 45-minute drive to the Big Oak Flat entrance of Yosemite National Park.

When to Get There
The gallery is open daily from 9am to 5pm (until 6pm during the summer) every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, when hours are reduced to 10am to 3pm. The gallery is closed on Christmas Day. On most Saturdays at 3 pm, the curator offers fine-print tours, and free camera walks are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Ansel Adams, Photographer
A film about Adams, Ansel Adams, Photographer, is screened every Friday and is available for sale at the bookshop. Released in 2002, this documentary follows the life of the photographer and is as visually pleasing as it is informative, with beautiful shots of the American West (including many from Yosemite itself).
