The Basics

Borobudur, built in the seventh and eighth centuries, consists of six square platforms decorated with more than 2,500 relief panels and some 500 Buddha statues, making it one of the most decorated temples on earth. Guided tours of the complex uncover the stories behind the imagery while giving visitors a better understanding of nirvana, karmic laws, and the life of Buddha. You can choose between intimate small-group tours, private tours, or combo tours that might include cycling through nearby villages, rafting on the Progo River, or visits to Pawon and Mendut Temples. If you have some extra time, opt for a two-day tour that includes a visit to Prambanan, a UNESCO-listed Hindu temple.

Knowledgeable and fluent English guide

Borobudur & Prambanan (with other local temples)
Galih was an excellent guide who was both fluent and knowledgeable about the history of the temples. He punctually arrived as the specified time and was able to also answer any additional questions I had. I recommend people to choose this tour if they are interested in knowing more about the sites in an intimate setting with a professional guide.

Borobodur, Merapi and Prambadan day trip from Yogjakarta

Borobudur Temple, Merapi Lava Tour, Prambanan Temple
Want I timely pick-up, good driver, good English and have interesting local information. Heavy rain spoiled Merapi volcano views, but enjoyed Borobodur (with guide) and Prambadan. Good lunch spot - simple but fair value. Expensive trip but all included other than lunch. Enjoyed the day.

Borobudur Sunrise and Temples Tour from Yogyakarta
This tour does a great job of packaging many of the key sites of the area into a convenient day. We felt like we made great use of our time in Yogyakarta. Great information and nice pace. Be sure to bring along some snacks/food as it may be a long stretch between mealtimes.

Private Tour: Full Day Lava Tour By Jeep In Merapi Volcano Including Borobudur Sunrise Pawon Mendut and Prambanan Temples Tour
Our guide Tulus was great, made sure that our day trip is comfortable, very knowledgeable and also give us lots of personal space as a couple. We definitely enjoyed the trip and recommend it. The jeep guide was also great in taking pictures and friendly, his name is Dani I believe, overall great experience.

A great tour but really pricey

Yogyakarta Cultural Tour: Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple and Merapi Volcano
This is an excellent tour provided by a very professional travel agency. Our driver was punctual in meeting us, friendly and attentive. Unfortunately his English was not very good and we didn't always understood what he was saying at the minor sights. Do note that the fee does not include a guide at Borobudur or Prambanan. But you can engage one for RP150,000 per hour at both places. Given how inexpensive things are in Yogjarkarta, I found what I paid for the tour to be pricey and I suspect that one can find much cheaper alternatives.

Sunrise at Borobudur

For many a traveler, watching a beautiful sunrise from the top of Borobudur is a bucket-list experience. A Borobudur sunrise tour gets you into the complex in the early morning, before the main gate opens, for a chance to see (and photograph) the stupas at their most photogenic.
