Xian Great Mosque

Huajue Alley, ZhongLou ShangQuan, Lianhu Qu, Xian, China, 710001

The Basics

Tucked away in Xian’s vibrant Muslim Quarter, in the heart of the walled city, the Xian Great Mosque is free to Muslims, with a moderate charge (higher in summer than in winter) for non-Muslim travelers. Visit as part of a guided or self-guided walking tour of the Muslim Quarter, perhaps alongside other central sights such as the Xian City Wall, the Bell Tower, and the Drum Tower. Alternatively, visit on a Xian city tour that covers attractions such as Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Shaanxi History Museum, and the Temple of the Eight Immortals along with the nearby Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum.

Thoroughly enjoyed the day and my guide, Rosemary was excellent. This trip is also a great way, if you are short of time in X'ian, to get to see some stunning big highlights all in one day. We even added in a lovely tea ceremony too. A long but thoroughly enjoyable day.

Wow what a fantastic day! Once again Viator has delivered exactly what we required. From 9am to 10pm we managed to pack so much into one day and never felt rushed or stressed. This was of course mainly due to our wonderful guide Rosemary - what a pocket rocket. Well done and thank you Rosemary! M and J

Rosemary was an excellent guide, extremely knowledgeable of the city's history and culture and flexible to adjust the itinerary and accomodate requests. This tour was the ideal way to see all the highlights of Xi'an if you only have one day.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and made this tour worth every buck! The show was very different and we were really glad we made it. The dinner was just exquisite! Only thing we would recommend to improve in this tour was the AC not working well during the dinner show!

Excellet! Our tour guide was Jing Jing Rosemary, she was extremely nice and knowledgeable and very informative in a cool way, took us to Xian Terracota warriors and also to a Terracota factory where we were really impressed for their work, I can truly say she was one if not the best of our tour guides in China. Thank you so much Jing Jing!

Great tour of Xian

Would highly recommend this tour. Our tour guide Owen was great with his communication prior to the tour with e-mails & texts to ensure we are kept right up to date on the arrangements and meeting location. Bang on time a call to our hotel room advising us he was ready in the lobby for our day. The transportation was clean with an excellent confident driver which is a must in the challenging roads of China. On Owens recommendation we agreed the Terracotta Warriors are best left to the afternoon due to the morning crowd, so we headed into Xian to the other sights. Owen gave us a great trip into the history and sights of central Xian, allowing plenty of time to look and ask questions, his knowledge was awesome. Lunch was marvellous, in the Chinese restaurant with plenty to eat and drink, also catering for vegetarians. On to the star attraction of the warriors, again his knowledge along with the sight we had travelled 6500miles to see made it a day we will never forget. Would highly recommend this trip and Owen and his team, outstanding

What a great day seeing the sights of Xi-an, especially with our guide Evan

Our trip to Xi-an was Fantastic! First of all, our guide - Evan - couldn't have been better. He picked us up from the hotel, and took us to the Terracotta Warriors. Wow. Then to a restaurant he liked for Lunch, and ordered local foods for us. Next to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. A quick rest at our hotel, then off to the Tang Dynasty Dinner Show. While that was a little touristy, the Dumplings were great, and the show was pretty. I highly recommend this tour, and especially if you can get Evan as a guide. He was knowledgeable, funny, and a great communicator!

This trip was amazing, with the tourguide Rosemary. She told me a lot about the history of Xian. The Terracotta Warriors was also something that I find very interesting. The City Wall has it own historyand Rosemary told me this in perfect and amazing words. The lunch in a nearby local restaurant was so good and I was very satisfied with the food. The Great Mosque was very crowded with incredibly many people. It sold local food in a lot of stands. I was incredibly pleased with this trip, and if someone gets Rosemary as a guide you can be happy

The Story Behind the Great Mosque of Xian

Xian was a key staging point on the Silk Road, a network of trade routes that linked the Middle East, Africa, and Eurasia for around 1,500 years. The Great Mosque was founded as early as 742—not long after Islam itself. But the 20-odd buildings you see today were built much more recently. Some claim it was the celebrated Chinese Muslim admiral Zheng He (1371–143?) who gave the mosque its current form.
