The Basics

Verona’s Roman Arena is the symbol of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed city center and one of its most popular sights. Though much of the original pink-and-white limestone outer facade was pilfered at the end of the Roman Empire and a catastrophic earthquake in 1117 destroyed the rest, the interior and outstanding acoustics remain remarkably intact. In the 19th century, the city began using the arena once again to hold performances, and a staging of Verdi’sAida in 1913 to celebrate the composer’s 100th birthday marked its reincarnation as one of Italy’s most important outdoor theaters.

By day, you can book a Verona Arena tour with skip-the-line entrance to the amphitheater or join a small-group walking tour of the city’s highlights, including the arena as well as Piazza delle Erbe, Castelvecchio, Torre dei Lamberti, and the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore. On summer evenings, you can book a ticket for the annual opera festival or other event, and enjoy the arena decked out for a performance.

The city of Romeo and Juliet: An audio tour through Verona's cobbled streets
It was very nice to discover Verona on your own pace. It was better understandable than a live tour guide who speaks for a crowd. We’ll definitely use this app in other city’s too!

Verona Arena guided Tour with Fast Track entrance
The guide was really friendly and outgoing, her English was pretty good, too. We could ask questions ourselves and she had an answer to all of them. Despite that the information given wasn't too embedded in a long-winded review of the arena and Italian's history but very compact and interesting without overchallenging anyone. Although I was by myself I made friends easily and everyone was in a really good mood. Of course we also didn't have to queue for anything because our guide was getting the entrance tickets for everyone in a heartbeat (those tickets are included in the tour fee though). Would totally recommend!

Excellent tour with kids! Activities and information was tailored to our varying interests and age levels...My kids getting to play “gladiators” in the Arena, and the funicular ride with gorgeous views of Verona were our favorite spots! The tour guide was super knowledgeable, friendly, and understanding! Great way to see the highlights of Verona!

Verona and Lake Garda Day Trip from Milan
Lovely tour of Verona and Lake Garda with Serena and the coach driver. Very well organised and Serena spoke very good English and instructions when we were left to our own devices was concise and clear. Possibly would've liked a little more time at Lake Garda but all in all a lovely day out.

Benedetta was a wonderful tour leader, who shared Verona’s history and sights in such a fun and engaging manner. We’d definitely recommend adding on the Arena tour, as you skip the line to get in, plus get the added info from your guide. This was a great tour!

When to Get There

The arena is open from 8:30am to 7:30pm daily, and from 1:30pm on Mondays. These hours may change on performance days. While you can visit the arena year-round, it is especially memorable in the evening during scheduled performances from June to September. Opera seasons runs during this time; performances begin after sunset (usually around 9pm), and the amphitheater is lit by hundreds of small candles.
