Walt Disney® Family Museum

104 Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA, 94129

The Basics

It is impossible to understand today’s animated movies without looking at the groundbreaking work of Walt Disney Studios®. The museum deconstructs Disney’s foundational efforts to create both appealing characters, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the processes that bring them to life. Interactive galleries with listening stations reveal important moments in Disney’s life, including producing feature-length films in Hollywood. The work of pivotal Disney® animators, such as Glen Keane, and art directors, such as Mary Blair, is also discussed. Disney® fans can explore* Fantasia* in galleries dedicated to its portrayal of the natural world in a realistic way or take a look at Disney’s work on Disneyland® and EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow).

Tours of the area, such as adventure van or bike excursions, stop at the Disney® Family Museum but don’t include admission.

I didn’t realize Walt Disney, had pioneered so many innovations and breakthroughs, in the animation and in the filming industry. To experience his life time achievements in a single day was all inspiring.

There was so much more content this museum had to offer than we originally thought. We spent 2 hours here and loved every minute, an insanely interesting museum and look into Walt’s history. Highly recommend.

The museum itself was INCREDIBLE!! Every display and historical information were well put together and organized. The staff from entrance to all the way to exit were ALL FRIENDLY and ON-TOP if their job. Meaning, they greet, have very proper way of speaking to all visitors, stay around to make sure people follow rules and kept mask on for SAFETY, guided visitors to right directions, and they were simply NICE workers and showed they loved what they do. The manager at Walt Disney name Christine was phenomenal. We’ve explained our situation of getting lost in the city, which explained how we got there late than scheduled time we originally set; she understood our situation and worked with us. These truly showed how she valued customers and what type of manger or leader she is. This reflected how she run the business with great skills for people and more than sure how she deals and trains her Walt Disney staffs. Overall, I was very pleased with the museum’s displays and history, and the ENTIRE WONDERFUL workers and manager ( Christine). Thank you ALL! Almina

The Disney Story is Fascinating!

It is a wonderful property to visit. The museum itself is full of fascinating Disney history presented chronologically. It gave you a real sense of the overall Disney story with lots of insights on little known aspects of the family's life. It takes more than 90 minutes to go through. If you really take it all in it would be a three-hour visit. There were some limitations due to COVID restrictions, and while they were probably a little too cautious, overall, they handled it well.

Wonderful museum. Covers so much of the history of Walt Disney from his early beginnings to present. Wonderful that it has a nice home in the Presidio. We also did the special exhibit which closes in January. Well worth the time and the price.

The beginning of the museum says the average visitor spends two and a half to three hours at the museum. We were there seven hours! Fascinating looks at one of our American icons of ingenuity. It was also great to see actual examples of the equipment developed by Disney and his company that advanced the development of animated film, like the multiplane film machine.

The perfect museum for fans of Disney history. Unexpectedly includes an excellent photo op of the Golden Gate Bridge. If it's a nice day, be sure to explore the beautiful Presidio.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Fans of anime, cartoons, and 20th-century animation learn about the origins of this field of visual arts.

  • Children can explore the various media that are Disney’s legacy. Disney’s characters are explored here through the creative process, not through feature-length films.

  • Each gallery offers listening stations and the chance to view extensive video and digital film shorts created by Disney, which is half the fun but time-consuming.

  • The on-site museum cafe offers light bites and seasonal fare.
