The Basics

Whether setting sail on a boat tour, exploring lakeside Maya villages, or hiking through Atitlán Natural Reserve, there are plenty of options for discovering Lake Atitlán. On the northeast shore, the lively village of Panajachel is the starting point for most visitors, but Lake Atitlán tours also run from Antigua and Guatemala City. In addition to taking in views of the beautiful lake, adventure tours offer a more active experience, including kayaking excursions, sunset bike tours, hiking, rock climbing, and even paragliding over the lake.

Very nice excursion
Miguel was a great guide and driver. He was on time, patient, informative, helpful and caring. The lake is very scenic and we had the choice of what area we wanted to visit. There was a steep uphill walk with the kids but we were able to go at our own pace. Boat ride back was bumpy and the engine cut off close to end. Not too traumatic. The people were friendly and we got a few souvenirs.

Lake Atitlan: Mayan Ceremony at the Sacred Caves
Our guide was incredible. We really enjoyed learning the history of the town and the way a lot of the local people intertwine aspects of Catholicism and Mayan traditions. This was a realistic, interesting, learning experience. Thanks so much!

Lake Atitlan Off The Beaten Path: A Day Full of Adventure from Antigua
What a wonderful way to experience the area, with Lee and his wife and a team of local tour guides. in hindsight I may have stayed the night there at the lake. Kayak Guatemala offers a well organized and very professional experience with lots of depth and very educational. Highly recommend.

Lake Atitlán Sightseeing Cruise with Transport from Guatemala City
Highly recommend! Due to Covid-19, the tour consisted of only my girlfriend and me. Our tour guide/driver was Miguel (Mike) who was highly knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating (request him!!). The drive was pleasant and we were given an option once we arrived at the lake as to which island we wanted to tour. We suggest San Juan as it has a rich Mayan history/culture. Activities included participating in a Mayan basket weaving activity, touring a local art gallery, visiting a coffee-bean plantation, and just cruising/shopping around the small village. The views of the lake are breathtaking! We opted to eat lunch on Panajachel and had delicious/inexpensive food before heading back to Guatemala City. Book this tour! It will exceed your expectations :)

Lake Atitlan Family Fun Day from Antigua
Terrific trip. It’s two buses and a boat ride to get to Lee and Elaine’s idyllic home on the shores of Lake Atitlan but it was well worth the early rise and the effort. Elaine could not have been a more hospitable, gracious host, with bountiful. delicious home-cooked meals for both breakfast and lunch. Our guide, Juan Carlos, was knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. He led us on a long kayak through the lake, ending up at a jumping site where my two sons - ages 24 and 21 - did their best Acapulco cliff-diving imitation. Then, back at our home base and after lunch, we did two hikes - one led by Elaine through a nearby canyon, the other led by Juan Carlos through the hills and villages to a nearby hotel where we got the boat launch back to town, where we got our van back to Antigua. It was a long day but a lot of fun - I would definitely recommend this. Five stars!

Indian Nose Peak and Lake Atitlan Sunrise Tour from Panajachel
Amazing, amazing, amazing. Our guide was Alex and he was truly AMAZING. Friendly, knowledgeable, and outgoing. We did the sunrise tour with Alex and he brought us banana bread, fruits and coffee. He then drove us around multiple towns to eat delicious local food. Alex is the best and I would highly recommend him and this tour service.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The easiest way to explore the lakeside villages is by boat, and local ferries run from Panajachel to most destinations.

  • The only ATM is located in Panajachel, and most villages only accept local currency, so stock up before you head out.

  • The main transport options around Lake Atitlán are small boats and tuk-tuks, so pack light as there’s not much space for heavy luggage.

  • Swimming in the lake is possible at designated areas.

The Villages of Lake Atitlán

The liveliest place to stay is Panajachel, while tranquil San Marcos is known for its yoga resorts and laid-back atmosphere, and San Pedro is the party hub for backpackers and international travelers. To experience local Maya culture, head to San Juan, known for its traditional handicrafts; visit Santiago Atitlán to learn about Maya traditions; or browse the market stalls in Chichicastenango or Sololá. If you really want to escape the tourist trail, visit the tiny villages of Tzununa or Jaibalito.
