Established in 1940 by Nazi Germany, in abandoned Polish army barracks, Auschwitz was the largest concentration camp and extermination center. Out of the 1.3 million people which the SS and police deported, there were over 1.1 million men, women and children who lost their lives in this horrifying place. The Memorial is made up of two parts of the former camp: Auschwitz and Birkenau. This infamous concentration camp operated from May 1940 in the suburbs of Oswiecim (Auschwitz in German) until January 1945, when it was liberated by the 1st Ukranian Front of the Soviet Union’s Red Army. The tall barbed wire fences surrounding the block cells which were intended to house the suffering prisoners. The watchtowers and the wooden barracks, along with the gallows and gas chambers show the terrifying image and demonstrate the enormous scale and depravity of Nazi Germany. It was the largest concentration camp of the II World War.

Auschwitz is located 450 km from Prague so it’s pretty far from the capital of Czech Republic but it’s possible to vist the camp in one day trip. One way driving takes appprox 5 hours and sightseeing with local guide inside Auschwitz lasts 3 hours and 30 min. Wieliczka Salt Mine About 10 miles (16 km) out of the city, but still within the Krakow metropolitan area, lies the city of Wieliczka, home to the renowned Salt Mine, considered to be the epitome of technological progress made by humans. During the 16th century, royal guests began visiting the mine lured by the developing culture and health benefits. Over the years, miners transformed the mine from a typical dark cave into a majestic location.

It was the biggest Nazi concentration camp during World War II – a place of death for over million of people, mostly Jews. After the war, Polish authorities transformed the camp into a museum in order to honor the memory of the Holocaust victims.
