The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm, and closed on major holidays including Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Consider a weekday visit to avoid the crowds; you may want to visit a couple museums on the same day, since you'll be on New York's famous Museum Mile.
