Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall

The Basics

The greatest of Jamaican great houses sits high on a hill with views of Montego Bay and beyond, serving as a testament to the wealth, pomp, and grandeur of plantation-era Jamaica. Learn about Rose Hall’s slave history while taking in its antique splendor and original fittings, originally built by owner John Palmer and restored in the 1960s.

While daytime tours of Rose Hall Plantation focus on plantation history and historic insight into Jamaica’s era of slavery, night tours recount eerie tales and chilling stories involving murder, ghost sightings, and countless lovers. Said to have dabbled in black magic, Annie Palmer allegedly poisoned three husbands while living there, and her activities are the crux of the haunted night tour.

Round-Trip Shuttle Transportation to Rose Hall Great House from Montego Bay
My adult daughter and I toured Rose Hall Great House with VIP Tours (day tour) and it was a wonderful experience. We basically had the house to ourselves for at least a half hour. The guide was thoughtful and well versed in the historical background of Rose Hall. If you are afraid of ghosts, you might not want to tour but we loved it and would love to do it again, at night.

Cinnamon Hill Great House Tour - Home of Johnny Cash
Wonderful tour. Seeing the place where the Cash family and friends shared so many memories was a real insight into the down to earth life style of Johnny Cash. Visitors can expect to feel a real connection to the Man in Black and feel the same connection that we did while at one of his concerts or listening to his and Junes's music.

Round-Trip Shuttle Transportation to Rose Hall Great House from Montego Bay
Great tour. Gift shop is tiny and with the volume of people in and out, it can be rather arduous. Recommend to get your souvenir photo outside then enter, or if you are inside first, when checking out let the cashier know you want the photo. Why? They charge you inside for the photo. IF you don't do it one of the above ways, you will soon realize why I gave suggestions. History of the plantation was amazing. The house is beautiful......

It had just heavily rained so our pick up was 20 minutes late but our friendly tour guide Rolando made up for it. While traveling into the heart of Montego Bay during wet rush hour we felt safe with Rolando’s experienced driving. He answered any questions we had about the area, shared interesting facts, and gave us the freedom to choose whether or not we wanted to stop at some of the locations on the tour. We ended up stopping at the Sam Sharpe Square to look around, peeked at the St. James Parish Church from the van, went inside and around the Hard Rock Cafe, ending with the White Witch of Rose Hall Tour. We arrived 15 minutes late because of heavy traffic but Rolando made sure we joined a tour that had just started. It didn’t seem like we missed much since participants were only getting their photos taken outside the house. Overall the trip was a neat, safe way to see downtown Montego Bay. If you’re staying at a fancier resort be aware you’ll notice a stark contrast between a ritzy resort and downtown Montego Bay. The only reason I’m giving this tour 4 stars instead of 5 is because the photos on the site don’t really accurately depict what the downtown experience is like.

The Legend of Annie Palmer

Stories allege that, after the murder of her three husbands, Annie Palmer routinely took slave lovers and had them killed when she grew tired of them. Allegedly a vengeful slave smothered her to death with a pillow in her bed in the 1830s. Musician Johnny Cash recorded a song about the legend, “The Ballad of Annie Palmer.” If you need to steady your nerves and quell your goose bumps after a candlelit night tour, the on-site Annie’s Pub serves up the famous rum cocktail Witches’ Brew.
