1200 Getty Center Dr., Los Angeles, 90049

The Basics

Even getting up to the Getty aboard the computer-operated tram is fun. From the sprawling arrival plaza, a natural flow of walkways, stairs, fountains, and courtyards encourages a relaxed pace between galleries, gardens, and outdoor cafés. Five buildings house collections of manuscripts, drawings, photographs, furniture, and decorative arts, and an assortment of pre–20th-century European paintings. Must-sees include Van Gogh’sIrises, Monet’sWheatstacks, and Rembrandt’sThe Abduction of Europa.

The Getty is one of LA’s most visited museums, so purchase tickets ahead of time to guarantee admission. City highlights tours stop here, often in combination with the Getty Villa or celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. If you’re interested in aerial views of the remarkable building, take a helicopter or plane tour of the area.

Great tour
Menna was an excellent docent! My husband and I learned so much about the history of the Getty and famous works of art. This intimate tour is perfect for anyone visiting the Getty for the first time.

Ellen was a very knowledgeable and personable guide. We would still be wandering around if we didn’t have her! This is the best way to actually learn about what you are seeing and about the artists

Demystifying Art at The Getty ---90 minutes
My wife and I had a private tour of the Getty Centre Collection with Ellen in February. In short it was fabulous.Ellen is passionate about art and it shows. Her tour was informative, interactive, well researched and entertaining. Her verbal dialogue is supported by photoboards and other props which enhanced the tour.At one stage we were testing our drumming skills and the Getty acoustics with drumsticks on the stonework! We particularly enjoyed the stories behind the paintings and the stories behind the artists. As a holder of a Getty Docent Certificate and former guide at the Getty for many years she knows the Collection back to front so we were able to see and enjoy the highlights of the Collection without feeling rushed. We were left wanting more. Ellen is witty, intelligent and blessed with an engaging sense of humour. This tour is ideal for anyone irrespective of their level of artistic knowledge. Done miss it

We took the two hour tour with our guide Ellen. We all wished it had been 3 hrs. She was so knowledgeable about art in general, and these pieces in particular. She really made the art come alive! Highly recommend this tour!

We had a fantastic private tour of the Getty with Ellen. We are locals who have visited the Getty many times, but never with an expert guide. Ellen's ability to quickly navigate the galleries pointing out the must-sees and captivating our attention with the fascinating backstories of the artists and their work made the 90-minute tour fly by.

Ellen is an outstanding tour guide who is very knowledgable, warm and friendly. She inquired and then tailored our tour of the Getty Center specifically to artists and works of our interest. Ellen created an interactive, engaging tour, welcoming questions and discussion. Knowing it was a birthday celebration, she went above and beyond surprising us with a sweet treat during a short break. Looking forward to touring with Ellen again! Highly recommend!
