The Basics

Three of the mine's nine levels are open to visitors. Explore these upper areas and see underground lakes, pits and chambers that have been made into detailed chapels, and an array of statues and monuments, all carved from salt. The mine's claim to fame is its ornate Chapel of St. Kinga, made entirely of salt—from the chandeliers to the altarpieces—over the course of 30 years. Wieliczka is a popular site for travelers to Krakow, often visited on a half-day trip with a tour guide or combined with a trip to the nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

Must compliment the driver, really professional and friendly and went out his way. The English tour guide at Auschwitz-Birkenau I want to compliment with how she conducted the tour. You could hear the respect for those who lost their lives. The English guide at Wieliczka Salt Mine was amazing and went out her way to explain the mine and its history. I highly recommend both tours and Mr Shuttle.

Auschwitz- Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine in One Day
Don’t want to say too much about Auschwitz. If you are in Krakow you have to go. Tour picks you up at hotel and drops you back. The salt mines are wonderful and a must visit. They are not too crowded due to Covid so now is a must. And a got a little souvenir found on floor. Tour company very good. Would recommend.

Best way to do 2 UNESCO sites in one day

Day Trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine from Krakow including Lunch
You would only be able to do these two sites in one day with the assistance of a tour. The shuttle van was modern and air conditioned with a helpful driver. The included lunch had fresh salad and fruit, a big plus on other ‘box lunch’ tours. Obviously to be viable the bus was pretty much full, social distancing is not possible so don’t go if this is a concern for you.

Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine guided ONE DAY TOUR
My 2 points of contract where veryfriendly. Unfortunately we went to Auschwitz in July during Covid so I felt a bit rushed w the tour. Pick ups and drop reliable. Provided lunch was sub par. The salt mine was interesting. Highly recommend anyone on this tour to be prepared for a lot of walking.

Wieliczka Salt Mine Tour from Krakow
Great experience although there are over 800 stairs to go down so not for the infirm! Very interesting and beautiful, great tour guide, my only complaint is the safety of the lift back to the ground, you are packed like sardines and the door would not even open when we got to the top as there were so many people squashed in!! I dread to think what would happen if it broke down!

Wieliczka Salt Mine Guided Tour with pickup
Driver turned up on time and took us to the entrance of the salt mine. As it was a private pickup, we were able to have lunch at the underground restaurant and also an option to see the museum after the tour.

Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine in One Day from Krakow
Booked for Partner's 30th so not my bag. But even i thoroughly enjoyed it. The salt mines were beautiful. Auschwitz was harrowing, but really interesting and our guide was very knowledgeable. Definitely recommended.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Visitors to the mine are guided in groups, with most salt mine tours lasting two hours.

  • To avoid long lines often seen in summer, book your tour in advance.

  • Tours through the mine involve walking about 1.25 miles (2 km) and descending dozens of stairs (the return trip up is by lift).

  • Temperatures are cool below ground, so dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.

  • Admission to the onsite Krakow Salt Works Museum is included with mine entry.
