Jasper National Park, Jasper, Alberta, Canada

The Basics

As one of Alberta’s—and indeed Canada’s—most-hyped beauty spots, Maligne Lake is included on many sightseeing tours of the Jasper and Banff regions. Chauffeured sidecar and coach tours generally make stops at natural attractions such as Medicine Lake, Maligne Canyon, and other Rocky Mountain hot spots. Maligne Lake is also often included on the itinerary.

Some half and full-day sightseeing tours incorporate boat cruises on the lake, and guided nature and wildlife-watching walks around the lake. Several backcountry campgrounds, accessible by canoe, are located on the lake’s edge. Canoes can be rented from the Maligne Lake Boathouse.

Jasper National Park Tour: Maligne Valley, Medicine Lake and Spirit Island
Visiting the wild life around the city, in the way of Maligne Canyon. The information given by the guide was so interesting. He showed us something that we could never find by ourselves. His responsibility and care made a convenient, smooth, enjoyable and memorable day for us.

One of the most beautiful day trips ever. Our tour guides on the bus (Norm) and on the boat (Sam and Jordan) were incredible. The views are spectacular and the info was educational and super entertaining.

Jasper Wildlife and Waterfalls Tour with Maligne Lake Hike
I really enjoyed this tour. The scenery was beautiful and the hike was wonderful and easy to do and simply beautiful. There was an option to do a boat ride that you could do if you had arranged that previously. I did the hike. Our tour guide was wonderful, knowledgeable, friendly, and really really nice. We only saw a bald Engle and some mountain goats so not seeing more wildlife was kinda disappointing but aside from that it was a really enjoyable time.

Jasper National Park Tour: Maligne Valley, Medicine Lake and Spirit Island
I had been to Jasper several times as a child, this was the first time for my husband. The tour was absolutely mesmerizing. I highly recommend this tour to everyone. The guides we had were helpful and very informative. Lutz was our tour guide with Sundog tours he just made the tour so enjoyable, and on the Maligne Lake cruise we had Nick, Annabelle and Natalie, just a great crew and a lot of fun. Maligne Canyon was just breathtaking. To top everything off the wildlife came out to visit.

Jasper Wildlife and Waterfalls Tour with Maligne Lake Hike
Ross was a great guide! Not only was he informative, but enthusiastic as well. He answered the many questions we had about the dying trees and he held an optimistic view of things. We found him very uplifting. We just missed a moose sighting in the lake, but we did see an osprey chasing an eagle...he was a bit mad! It was a bit overcast for our other sightings as well, but we had a lovely time!

How to Get There

Maligne Lake is at the end of Maligne Lake Road, about 31 miles (50 kilometers) from Jasper. As there is no public transport in the area, the best way for car-free travelers to get here is by organized tour. Driving from Jasper will take about an hour.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Maligne Lake is between late May and early October, when boats and paddlers can go out on the water. Though the north part of the lake can become busy, quieter spots—accessible only on foot or by boat—can always be found to the south. In winter, the frozen lake is peaceful, attracting only a few hardy snowshoers, though road conditions in the park can sometimes make the lake difficult to access.

How to See Spirit Island

In theory, visitors can paddle or kayak to Spirit Island, though it’s about an 8.5-mile (14-kilometer) one-way journey and it can take the best part of a day. Unless you’re a fit, experience kayaker, and have booked a lakeside campsite to stay at, you’re better off doing a Maligne Lake cruise, which will get you out to within view of the island and back in just 90 minutes.
