The Basics

Komodo tours typically focus on either the dragons or the diving, and generally start from the town of Labuan Bajo on Flores island. The dragons, which can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) long, live almost exclusively within Komodo National Park, and tours typically focus on Rinca island, Padar island, or Komodo island. Expect to enjoy a couple of hours’ trekking with a guide, with sightings pretty much guaranteed. Most boat trips will include stops for snorkeling and on photogenic beaches, such as Pink Beach.

Komodo dive tours are typically on liveaboard boats, usually based out of Labuan Bajo. The diving in Komodo, generally considered some of Indonesia’s best, focuses on high-current sites and, typically, larger sea creatures. Signature sites include Batu Bolong and Cannibal Rock.

Amazing creatures on this island...

2-Day Komodo National Park and Rinca Island Wildlife Adventure from Bali
Amazing creatures on this island. Amazing nature and hotel and service. The "english" guide is hard to understand and there are NO safety instructions at all. But on the Komodo Island there is a ranger that walks with you.

Such an amazing day! They did warn us that we may not see komodo dragons or manta rays but we got really lucky. The beaches they took us to were so pretty and the view from Padar island was amazing. The crew was super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful as well. It is a lot to do in one day but absolutely worth it. The best trip we've done in Indonesia so far!

2-Day Komodo National Park and Rinca Island Wildlife Adventure from Bali
Our tour was a major hi light of our 2-week vacation. Our tour guide, Ari went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, providing an extra stop to a local village, when he saw that we were looking for a deeper cultural understanding. We saw 7 full-sized, healthy Komodo dragons and a baby. Such a memorable tour!

3-Day Komodo island &RincaTrails Tour with or without Roundtrip Flight From Bali
Yes I would highly recommend this. Every part of the trip we were looked after very well. Day 1 was brilliant, great food, friendly crew and everything explained well. Rinca was brilliant and Flying Fox Island experience was breathtaking and will never be forgotten! Day 2 was good although somewhat exhausting but still very enjoyable! Only critism is the 'treks' are hard work and this is not mentioned on tour! Also baggage allowance is now 7kgs so this needs to be updated on your tour information. Very good time had!

Our on time departure with the speedboat allowed us to see all the sights with time to spare at every stop. Really enjoyed Padar, Pink Beach, the Komodo dragons and a few more sights for snorkeling. The staff was ver helpful and friendly, and knowledgeable about the area. Highly recommended!

2-Day Komodo National Park and Rinca Island Wildlife Adventure from Bali
This trip is priceless! Hard to describe the feeling of standing within eight feet of one of the amazing creatures! All I can say is if you are going to Bali, this is one side-trip that you do not want to miss. The tour guide, captain and ranger of the Park were wonderful and I highly recommend this adventure!!!!!!

Very important that you should advise that the fees and entrance to the parks should be covered in local currency, and also an idea of how much to change and bring to the tour. We had problems because we thought we were going to be able to pay entrance to the park in US$. We knew we were supposed to pay and wanted to do so, but they did not want to receive US$ and were suggesting that we should go back to town and miss the tour. Was an awful experience, for we travelled from very far away just for that tour to Komodo Island

Amazing day!

One day Komodo trip with Bintang Komodo Tours
The boat we were on looked a little sketchy and could use some updating but the gentleman working the boat were amazing. They were incredibly helpful. We saw Padar Island, Komodo Park, Pink Sand Beach, snorkeling, snorkeling with mantas and then Kanawa Beach. Kanawa Beach could be skipped. Our group just sat in the bar and visited as the beach was not very nice. The pink sand beach was breathtaking. It was more pink than I expected and the water is amazing clear. It was my favorite spot of the day. The komodo tour was great. We saw a number of dragons. Was so exciting to see these creatures up close. I had never snorkeled before so the group went out and I and a few others hung back to practice. Really enjoyed that I could take my time to get comfortable on my own. There were beautiful reefs where I was so still got to see cool fish, etc. I definitely would recommend this tour!

A great tour through the islands...

2-Day Komodo National Park and Rinca Island Wildlife Adventure from Bali
A great tour through the islands with a stop for a swim, a great lunch and finally the nature preserve with the Dragons as the highlight of the tour. Guides were great and along to help at every step of the way. We saw plenty of Dragons as well as deer, water buffalo and monkey's. Had to wait at the bat site about an hour for the sun to go down but then hundreds of bats take to the sky. Downside is that it would be great to go to the hotel from the plane for a short while to prep for the tour. Tour operator wanted to go straight to the boat with my luggage and hotel does not have a room ready when you land.

SInce the only schedule information...
Matthew C, Jan 2014
2-Day Komodo National Park and Rinca Island Wildlife Adventure from Bali
SInce the only schedule information for the tour online was for the option including flight it made it challenging to figure out what our schedule was going to be, having opted for the non-flight package. Though some E-Mails were sent we still did not have a clear idea and the final 'finish' time we were given was way off. It ended up really being more of a one day tour, with a couple of hours on the second day. The tour itself was very good and we did enjoy seeing the wildlife. It was great to see some Komodo dragons, as that was our main purpose for this tour, but it would have been nice to see some out on the trail and not just at the ranger station.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Komodo dive sites can be challenging: Bank a few dives before booking that liveaboard.

  • While Komodo dragons have poisonous saliva, Indonesian guides can typically control them with a forked stick.

  • Facilities in Komodo National Park are very limited: Be sure to bring essentials, such as medication.

How to Get There

Most Komodo National Park tours start from the vibrant port town of Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores: Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo has direct connections to Bali and Jakarta. Some Komodo backpacker boat tours set out directly from Bali, but most liveaboards base themselves out of Labuan Bajo for the season.

Komodo National Park Wildlife

Besides marine wonders, such as manta rays, sharks, whales, dugong, dolphin, and turtles, the desolate volcanic landscapes of Komodo, Rinca, Padar, and smaller islands are home to almost 6,000 Komodo dragons. Scientists studying evolution are fascinated by the islands, which are also home to Timor deer and wild boar.
