The Basics

The main attraction in Arthur’s Pass National Park is its many hiking trails, ranging from the family-friendly Arthur’s Pass Walking Track to the formidable multi-day Mingha-Deception and Three Passes tracks. Most offer grand views of forests, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, and more. You can also take a mountain-bike ride, go skiing or snowboarding, or climb Mount Rolleston. For history buffs, a Cobb & Co. stagecoach and the newly restored Jacks Hut offer a glimpse back to a time of gold rushes and dangerous road building.

Many full-day or multi-day tours explore Arthur’s Pass from Christchurch, and include a ride on the TranzAlpine railway as well as hotel pickup and drop-off.

Perfect day trip in Christchurch.
The tour was excellent with our small group of 4 guests. Our tour guide, Peter was the best. TransAlpine Train is very unique as it goes thru the plains and southern Alps with very different scenery. After disembarking the train our short walking tours of Arthur’s Pass was quite enjoyable. Finishing with a pint of beer and tasty lunch at a quaint local hotel. Overall had a great day. Thanks again to Peter our tour guide making it feel very personable.

Arthur's Pass Full-Day Tour Includes TranzAlpine Express Train from Christchurch
The views and the jet boat were the highlights.. The Train ride was just average. The shuttle ride took us to some nice overlooks. Did not see as many birds as we hoped.

Day Trip to Arthur's Pass including TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch
Our guide, Anujk, was exceptional. He knew where to stop for our best pics. He didn’t rush us at all and was very knowledgeable. He’s a great asset to the tour company. The views and the hike up to Devil’s Punchbowl were great. Oh, did we mention the views were great. Beautiful area of New Zealand.

Arthur's Pass Full-Day Tour Includes TranzAlpine Express Train from Christchurch
Scotty was an excellent and enthusiastic guide with lots of local knowledge and recommendations for how to get the most out of your time in Christchurch. We had a jam-packed day that exceeded our expectations. Even though the train ran late it was a wonderful day and Scotty was very attentive to everyone despite the fact that he worked overtime. Would totally recommend this tour!

Just about everyone agrees the tranzalpine is a great train ride and this tour took in the best part leaving us at Arthur's Pass to explore the park with our guide. No long hikes but the short walks were very scenic and photogenic,

Arthur's Pass National Park with TranzAlpine Train Tour from Christchurch
Peter our friendly guide picked us up and customized our day, accommodating our preferences and the weather. Awe inspiring scenery, despite the incessant drizzle, tempered by Peter’s informed observations plus a comfortable train and minibus drive, made for an interesting day.

Day Trip to Arthur's Pass including TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch
What a way to spend the day. The train ride is definitely worthwhile with stunning sceneries. But our tour guide was very attentive to our needs, making sure we got good seats to enjoy the views along the way. He picked us up at the train station, took us to all the major outlooks, giving us plenty of time to roam and take pictures in the different sites along the way. His knowledge of the region and of the places visited added to the day. He was attentive to our needs, offering coffee juices along the return journey.

The jet boat was my husband’s favorite experience and the sheep farm was mine. We both enjoyed the train but it was rainy so we couldn’t see much. Still worth it.

Excellent guide. Very knowledgeable and accommodating. Magnificent view! Would recommend more child friendly activities though. Examples could be feeding animals, or learning how to make hand-made things from sheep fur?

When to Get There

The park is open year-round. If you plan to do some tramping, the park is safest, warmest, and most picturesque around summer; for skiing and snowboarding, visit during winter. Bear in mind, though, that the weather at Arthur’s Pass is notorious for changing without warning—even if you’re hiking in the height of summer, be prepared for wet and windy weather.

A Bird-Watcher’s Paradise

Bird-watchers and more casual fans of New Zealand’s wildlife will have a field day at Arthur’s Pass, which is home to New Zealand’s alpine parrot, the kea, and the endangered great spotted kiwi—a nocturnal bird with a preference for higher altitudes. Fantails, morepork, kaka, and rock wrens (piwauwau) are among the park’s more common residents.
