Vörösmarty Square (Vörösmarty Tér)
The basics
Situated in Budapest's upscale shopping area, replete with fantastic restaurants and cafés, Vörösmarty Square is a must-see public space. Conveniently-located in central Budapest, the square is included on most Segway sightseeing tours, which are a great way to visit Budapest's most popular sights and explore the city's scenic neighborhoods. History walking tours and holiday walking tours are also a great option, especially around December, since tours typically stop at the celebrated Vörösmarty Christmas market.
Things to know before you go
- Stop by Vörösmarty Square before taking the M1 metro to Budapest attractions like the State Opera House, Heroes' Square, and Széchenyi Baths.
- Visitors with a sweet tooth shouldn't miss Gerbeaud Café, an old-fashioned eatery known for serving fantastic ice cream since 1870.
- History enthusiasts can learn more about Hungary's storied past by booking a historian-led walking tour, with a stop at Vörösmarty Square.
How to get there
Though sightseeing tours are the most convenient way to reach Vörösmarty Square, the next best option is to take the Budapest metro. Take the M1 metro line to the Vörösmarty ter stop. You can also hop on the scenic 2 tram, which runs along the Danube River past the Parliament Building and Chain Bridge. Hop off the tram at Vigadó tér, and walk a few steps east to the square.
Trip ideas
When to get there
There's really no bad time to visit this bustling square in central Budapest, particularly if you want to do some shopping. And if you love the holidays, don't miss Budapest’s annual Christmas Market in the square. Held from mid-November through Christmas, it features vendors selling everything from handicraft and jewelry to delicious pastries and mulled wine. The spring fair is also a popular attraction, held annually in mid-April.
Visiting the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
After exploring Vörösmarty Square, stroll along the Danube River until you reach the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the country's oldest scientific institution. Marvel at the ornate facade of the neo-Renaissance building, and stop in Széchenyi István tér for fantastic views of the Chain Bridge and Castle Hill. If you arrive on Monday or Friday, between 11am and 4pm, be sure to visit the academy's third floor art gallery.
