The Basics

The grand dome and colonnaded façade of Buda Royal Palace is impossible to miss, and most Budapest sightseeing tours will include at least a photo stop. There are numerous ways to admire the palace: Explore the Castle District on a walking or bike tour, ride the Castle Hill Funicular, or sail past the structure on a Danube River cruise.

Three of Budapest's premier museums are housed in the Royal Palace—the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the National Library—while the gardens offer sweeping views down Castle Hill.

This tour was extremely impressive. Our guide really did an amazing job telling the stories in a fun way and keeping everyone entertained the whole time. The location was really beautiful and walking around at night like this was a perfect way to see it. Thanks Joe!

Fools and Kings - Private Tour of Buda Castle District
Our Hungarian tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, welcoming, and patient. He took great care to ensure that our private tour was tailored to fit the experience we desired. Any questions we had, he was open to answer. Excellent customer service! We were able to take in the Buda Castle District, see the inside of St. Matthias' Church, lookout from the Fisherman's Bastilon, and more. The historical significance was a feature of our tour, and our guide did his utmost to ensure that we were able to approach these popular sights from a more local perspective. Our coffee and cakes were excellent as well, and there is an additional surprise in the middle of the tour (I won't spoil it, but you will like it). Finally, we walked down from Buda Castle and across the chain bridge to our hostel. The views are fantastic! Overall, I am very pleased with this experience.

Night-Time Dark History and Vampire Walking Tour in Buda Castle District
Me and my husband love these quirky tours. Our guide Valie was really enthusiastic and did a great job engaging with the whole group (28 of us in total!). We had a great time, despite the freezing cold, and got to see a quieter side of Budapest beautifully lit at night time. I would definitely recommend this trip to the wierder folks out there who like the dark side of history.

Night-Time Dark History and Vampire Walking Tour in Buda Castle District
I would definitely recommend this tour for the evening/night as Budapest is absolutely stunning when it's all lit up. My husband and I really enjoyed the story telling part and the guide was very entertaining. We learnt many interesting facts and the myths behind Dracula and the dark parts of history you don't really learn in school.

Night-Time Dark History and Vampire Walking Tour in Buda Castle District
Joe was a great guide and made this a fun and interesting tour. Didn’t know what to expect and just went for the fun “theme” of the tour. Turned out to be a great decision and a perfect way to see the Castle District lit up at night. Great stories every few minutes and a lot of chuckles. Glad we signed up!

How to Get There

The Royal Palace sits atop Castle Hill on the Buda side of the Danube. It’s possible to walk up from the riverside, but it’s a steep road; a far better option is to ride the Castle Funicular or take a taxi. The funicular departs from Adam Clarke Square (Clark Adam ter), located at the Buda end of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

When to Get There

The summer months of July and August are by far the most popular time to visit the palace—funiculars run every 10 minutes during this time but there are often queues, so make an early start to avoid waiting. During the holidays, the castle grounds hosts an atmospheric Christmas market.

Budapest’s Castle District

Set aside a morning or afternoon to explore the Castle District surrounding the palace, part of Budapest’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. A stroll around the medieval streets reveals a number of historic monuments, including the 19th-century Matthias Church, Vienna Gate, and the neo-Gothic Fisherman's Bastion. Admire the Matthias Well, a fountain with the figure of the young King Matthias as a hunter with his stag, and his beautiful beloved with her doe.
