Lake Annecy (Lac d'Annecy)

Auvergne-Rhône- Alpes

The Basics

During spring and summer, Lake Annecy draws swimmers and boaters to its pristine beaches— its considered the cleanest lake in Europe. Adventure seekers can opt for speedboating or waterskiing, or go biking on a 25-mile (40-kilometer) lakeside trail. Plus, parasailing above the lake offers unrivaled alpine views.

Day trips from nearby Geneva in Switzerland typically include a stop at Lake Annecy, and tend to include free time to soak up the scenery and wander Annecy’s colorful cobblestoned streets. Full-day tours often visit both Geneva and Annecy, and include a narrated sightseeing cruise on the lake.

Geneva and Annecy Tour With Optional Lake Geneva Cruise
A great tour! Gabriel was amazing with all his knowledge about Annecy and Geneva. Really enjoyed learning so much. Tip: bring Euros for Annecy or credit card. I was also asked to show my COVID vaccine card when I ordered at a restaurant in Annecy.

Nice little trip to a pleasant old town and lovely lake

Annecy Half-Day Tour from Geneva
Nice little journey to a pleasant small town with an old town side to it. Not massive and hardly comparable to Venice but does have some canals going through quaint little paths and alleyways. Area is of course full of restaurants, cafes and tourist souvenir shops. Still very nice and some nice pictures to be had. Tour has a guide tell you about the prison and castle. I personally would skip this and go off on your own so you have more time to look about. The lake area is lovely when the sun is out and you can see the mountains in the background. More time for yourselves means to be able to go in places and perhaps a boat trip. A full day here is only needed if you want to spend the day on the lake and go in museums for every detail.

Beautiful & historic Annecy

Annecy Half-Day Tour from Geneva
Annecy is a very beautiful place. It's quite a compact & historical little town which makes it very easy to get round and the weather was great which made it even better. Would have been good to have had a few more hours there, but a good trip nonetheless if you're pressed for time. Gabriel was a very polite and professional tour guide who answered all of our questions

Canyoning What A Great Time

Canyoning on Lake Annecy
We were a party of 10 (4 Adults, 4 x 15yrs and 2x 11yrs) we had such a good time & properly laughed. To start with you do have a 20 minute uphill walk, which is testing in the heat but it is absolutely worth it for the experience that you then get. Our guide Kevin was brilliant & spoke very good English. He also didn't allow us to have any kind of wobbles when we looked down what he wanted us to slide down, jump off & abseil down, he basically told us to get on with it, which was just perfect & well and truly needed. None of us had ever canyoned before & we absolutely loved every minute of it & have promised to go back again when we visit Annecy.

Geneva and Annecy Tour With Optional Lake Geneva Cruise
Well organised and followed as described. We started in Annecy as the first part. The Geneva Tour was actually a separate tour which was done after our Annecy tour. Enough time was spent in Annecy. Always plan ahead with the weather :)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Swimming is restricted in some areas, but the small beach at Sévrier is a favorite from which to take a dip.

  • Travelers with some boating skills can hire a boat by the hour or for a full day.

  • Public transit around the lake itself is limited, so it's easiest to get different perspectives by walking, driving, or biking.

  • While it’s possible to get to Lake Annecy from a dozen different villages, the best viewpoint is from Annecy.

Exploring the Venice of the Alps

A medieval time capsule of half-timbered pastel houses, cobblestone lanes, and Venetian-style canals, Annecy is among the most photogenic cities in southeastern France. Don’t miss the Old Town (Vieille Ville) where you can wander among flower-filled squares and savor regional cuisine served in traditional French boulangeries. Major sights include the 12th-century Palais de l’Île and art-filled churches, but the prime pleasure here is the charming ambience.
