The Basics

Mt. Lofty Summit is free to enter, although there is a small charge for parking. Visit on a day trip or half-day trip from Adelaide, on an Adelaide city tour, or as part of a longer journey, such as the epic road trip that links Melbourne and Adelaide. Combine the summit with a pilgrimage to the koalas at Cleland Wildlife Park, the historic German settlement of Hahndorf, a Murray River cruise, or Adelaide Hills wineries. Get active on guided or self-guided hiking trips along the Heysen Trail, to Waterfall Gully, or to Cleland Wildlife Park, or ride a mountain bike downhill from the summit to the city.

It was a wonderful tour which included a close encounter with koala bears and other other animals at Cleland Wildlife Park. Also, Mr Lofty was great too. Will definitely recommend this tour. Moreover, Mike our guide was very friendly and informative. Rita and Amante from Malta

An enjoyable but challenging hike to Mt Lofty

Self-Guided Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty Hike from Adelaide
Tour guide Mike was very friendly cooperative and gave good advice at the start of the hike location regarding routes and expected times which turned out to be fairly accurate. The first part of the hike was pleasant in the cool weather visiting the flowing first and second falls and passing through interesting Gully vegatation After this the steep climb commenced and apart from a few slight downhill and flatter stretches continued all the way to the summit. Other points of interest were Wilson's Bog a forest of many trees Mt Lofty Cottage and the city and suburban and ocean views from the summit After spending about 25 minutes at the summit the return journey although not requiring so much energy still required aj lot if care in the steep downhill sections. An early start is certainly a good recommendation as attempting the ascent in warm weather is not a good idea especially for those in the older age groups. My guide generously offered to take me all the way home but I did not accept his offer as I was not as exausted as he thought I was.

Great fun to explore wildlife in Australia

Cleland Wildlife Park Tour from Adelaide including Mount Lofty Summit
Lovely experience, the guide Mike is very professional and friendly, sharing a lot of useful tips in exploring the wildlife park. Particularly like the selfie with Koala part (forgot the exact name they got for this, which is included in the entry fee). Included in the tour is also a pack of animal food which can be fed to kangaroos and some other animals, but most of them are quite shy, so you need to really have the patience to wait, or look out for ones which are more adventurous than the others! The short detour to the summit is superb too, there you can have a good look at Adelaide city.

Cleland Wildlife Park Tour from Adelaide including Mount Lofty Summit
One of the main highlights of my trip in Adelaide. Although not much could be seen from Mount Lofty Summit due to the rainy weather, Cleland Wildlife Park was an absolute gem. Our guide gave us a few tips on what not to miss, but the most important tip was to line up for the koala hold experience early! Although the koala hold commenced from 2pm, bookings and payments could be made from 1.30pm. The koala hold actually sold out after 10 people at about 1.45pm when I went, and I was lucky to have just made it (tip: they determine the number of customers for the koala hold based on the experience and condition of the koalas who have been chosen for the job, so I understand it may differ day to day). It was definitely a memorable experience to be able to cuddle a koala, every penny is worth it! Being able to get close to, appreciate and feed a variety of animals was amazing. Staff members at the park were also excellent. Definitely recommend!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Panoramic views from the summit lookout make Mt. Lofty a must for photographers and Instagrammers.

  • Wear a hat, apply sunscreen regularly, and carry plenty of water when hiking the trails on Mt. Lofty.

  • The views from Mt. Lofty Summit are accessible to all, with accessible bathrooms, minimal gradients, and parking suitable for those with disabilities. It’s also possible to roll the Heysen Trail from Cleland Conservation Park, although the bumpy slope may challenge some and the lookout has stairs.
